Lecture July 2019: How the Bible is Written

On Friday 12 July at 2:00pm, Prof. Gary Rendsburg will be giving a lecture at Tyndale House entitled, ‘How the Bible is Written: Genesis 29’.

Gary A. Rendsburg is a professor of Biblical studies, Hebrew language, and ancient Judaism at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He holds the rank of Distinguished Professor and serves as the Blanche and Irving Laurie Chair of Jewish History at Rutgers University (2004-present), with positions in the Department of Jewish Studies and the Department of History. Prior to teaching at Rutgers, Gary taught for 18 years at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. (1986-2004) and for six years at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. (1980-1986).

Gary’s most recent book is entitled ‘How the Bible is Written’. Its goal is to bring interested readers--scholars and laypeople alike--closer to the original text of the Hebrew Bible and to provide them with a greater appreciation of its literary artistry and linguistic virtuosity. As such, it focuses not so much on what the Bible says as how the Bible says it. Specific topics treated include wordplay, wordplay with proper names, alliteration, repetition with variation, dialect representation, intentionally confused language, marking closure, and more, all of which are handled by the author with great clarity and competence.
